Business Studies is the simple term for what has now become the most popular choice for young people when continuing studies after school. It gives an insight into all aspects of businesses, whether it be a one-man band, or a world-wide brand. Business Studies is less a study sequence that will guarantee success later, more a set of courses and classes that allow you to see which aspects of business you will be good at, and tell you which will be better done by others.
Business Studies is already well established on the British academic programme. Although it is an option, many students have completed a two year study programme for Business GCSE, which is not difficult , and extremely useful as an outline for the Business World. Many continue this into A level, which is not much different to GCSE, except you are expected to have more complete knowledge when dealing with problems from Business Case Studies. It is not more complicated, just more complete. So it is not difficult, and very useful for anyone, even those who don't get that excited about working and careers.
Business Studies is Marketing, Law, Finance, Operations, Personnel, so it isn't full of an endless range of study areas. Generally speaking students tend to seperate themselves into those who like Operations (the technicians) , Marketing (the talk behind a product or service), and the Finance (the accurate preparation and representation of company accounts). All of these can be handled by experts outside of a company, but are more frequently handled internally.
My Business Studies at university (Business Studies didn't exist at GCSE or at A level in my day), comprised a mostly mathematical, economics, social or legal approach to Business Studies. So it was very theoretical, but nonetheless very interesting. Today the courses have become more practical and more superficial, therefore less demanding to learn and to teach.
Now I am in my 50s, and have had Business Studies teaching experience under the British school model, British university, and American accredited sytems, I have an overall view of alI the academic side of Business Studies . At the same time, my 17 years of experience in a French / German international Business School designed for apprenticeships, in particular technical ones, has given me the connection between studies and work. For young people it is hard to find the connection , since many don't really make any serious career/work decisions until they have gathered all of their diplomas until the age of 24 or so .
So now I am combining all of the school and apprenticeship experience, with a range of Online Business Studies diplomas to give students a personalised approach to Business Studies , often much quicker than going away to universtiy for five years, and correspondingly cheaper. You can also do it all from home, ort do casual work whilst doing the studying. For students to start their working lives with a mountain of debt seems to make no sense, when you can contruct your own academic profile yourself using online resources and some tutoring.
For " Bachelors " you will need three years at university , for "Masters " specialisations you will need another two. However, in the early years of my experiences of apprenticeship schools, you can reach specialised, operational, levels, with deep professional experience, in two years if it is organised efficiently. The professional experience is important, because this could provide you with an income while studying. Many students contructing their academic profiles in this way start their professsional lives with no debt at all, and no help from scholarships or parents.
Why do Business Studies not always get you the highly paid jobs you really dream of?
It's a simple matter of competition. There are so many students doing Business Studies, many of whom have special communication skills, or technical skills, or financial skills before they even start academic learning. They have a huge advantage over the other students. For one job there may be hundreds of applicants. Naturally the employer will want to take the best one.
At our school we concentrate on the tutoring and module learning aspect. A student will establish with his tutor which modules or diplomas, or professional experiences he needs to get behind him in the immediate future, and we put together a plan. The tutor acts principally at the academic level, but also makes sure that it corresponds to the work training undertaken, and the ambitions of the student. The work can take place on our premises, with full accommodation, or from a distance on the internet.
Our final objective is to complete every student's academic profile, as quickly as possible, either through intensive programmes, or through accompanying the student through online learning modules, and enter the student into the world of work in a prepared fashion, making it as much a formality as possible that the student starts his work career where he wants to. He won't be wasting any time in filling up his CV with jobs for which he is over-qualified, or which teach him nothing for his future positions. He saves time, he saves money, and he has far more satisfaction whilst completing his education. This is the modern way.
