By coincidence my own choice of studies has become the choice of studies of many budding sports stars - management. Why is this? Why don't they study history, or physics, or interior decorating?
It must be because Management Studies are easy, or better still, short. There is no deep complexity, no problems of understanding, no limitless bibliographies of background reading. Management is a study of human financial and practical existence. It is all around us. Everyone from a young age has been exposed to it, and has understanding of it with out realising it.
For the young sports person, management gives options. The two most pertinent ones include firstly an understanding of how his sport works. It is impossible to become a sports star without significant financial input. From an early age a sports enthusiast will have special training from qualified coaches, he'll have to travel to training and competition. He'll need exceptional accommodation and food, and equipment, that normal parents won't have to budget for. It is a great thing for the sports star himself to understand the scale of the money operation beihind him, and to take major responsability for this investment. For any investment in him, he must deliver. He must make sure that the business package that has become his development, will be meticulously planned, delivered and monitored. If there are any failings it is possibly he that is the first one to spot the failing.
Secondly is the life outside his chosen sport. Whether it be choosing study and training courses, or buying a car, or arranging accommodation and travel, every move you make in life has a calculation behind it. Every thing you consume will have a price that must be met from your pocket. You must understand budgets and the rules of opportunity - if you go down route A that costs €x, you will be excluding going down route B that costs €2x. And in route B you'll be exposing yourself to potential revenues of 10x, whereas on route A it will be at most 4x.
Decisions must be made on a business basis, inside and outside of sport, and study of business is a great way for a sports student to understand his two worlds at the same time - his world of sport, and his world outside.
If at any point the sportsman's star should start to fade, he will be faced with the realisation that not only will the potential rewards of sport never reach him, but he now no longer has these costs. Now these savings can be diverted into a new career, a career that offers almost unlimited options, because management studies allow you to remain a business generalist, or to specialise in one of the business disciplines, like marketing or finance. Or you can choose to enter the busines world in a particular domaine - you may like engineering , or food , or textiles. You don't need special training in these domains in order to enter their business worlds. It is sufficient to have a passion for it, and you have excellent chances of being successful. That passion that you had for your sport, gets diverted into another field. It's as simple as that.
The only issue you have to consider, as a young sports person, is that entry later into the world of business will be facilitated by a Business Diploma, whether you want to work for yourself or for someone else. More importantly, you want to exploit your youth. You have a young mind, it is so much easier to learn skills than when your mind has entered the routines of a specific job. The world of study is considering the outside world with an open mind, without having to commit yourself to any part of it, yet. It buys you time, and strengthens your decision-making power, at the same time. Everyone must study. Everyone must expose their minds to new things every day, whether you are young or old. The big plus when you are young, is that you don't have any baggage - you profit far more from learning than older people.
Both in our wider sports studies in Challenge Europe, and in the specialist tennis section of workouttennis.com, we have always insisted on every young person coming to our coaches and programmes with an educational plan. Most of this includes an analysis of previous schooling, but more appropriately we need to know if the sports person needs a school environment, or can study alone at home, with the support of a tutor. We cater for all, but our own speciality is Business Studies, learned on a distance learning programme.
